Defining globalization as connectedness - Environmental and Cultural Implications

1. Look up the in the glossary the definition of globalization.
2. What are the four dimensions of globalization that are mentioned in the glossary?
3. Look up in the glossary the definition of communicable disease.
4. Describe how communicable disease relates to the environmental aspect of globalization. Can you think of a negative and positive aspect of globalization related to communicable disease?
5. Can you think of a positive and negative aspect of cultural globalization?

Measuring globalization through connectedness -- Technological Implications

1. Read the page on Connectedness.
2. Go to the database.
3. Examine the following indicators: inflows of foreign population, inflows of foreign workers, internet users, mobile phones, personal computers, telephones mainlines. Describe how these indicators are related to globalization.
4. Choose one indicator and three countries (Brazil, Botswana, Switzerland), and the years 1990-2000. Create a line graph.
5. Describe what this graph tells you about the relative connectedness of each of these countries.
6. Describe how does technological connectedness relates to the cultural and political aspects of globalization.
